August is “Get Ready for Kindergarten” month, and the first day of school is just around the corner! Is your child starting kindergarten? This life-changing event can be both an exciting and a scary time for you and your child. You can help your kiddo get prepared for kindergarten by talking about what to expect on the first day of school. Picture books that detail the kinds of activities that happen at school and provide strategies for dealing with separation anxiety are great tools for easing your little one’s tensions. Some great choices include:
- “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn
- “Mom, It’s My First Day of Kindergarten!” by Hyewon Yum
- “Wemberly Worried” or “Chrysanthemum” by Kevin Henkes
Or check out one of the many other books about kindergarten at your library.
Sometimes it may be more difficult for you the parent to be ready to send your kiddo off to school. Reassure yourself with these books for parents on school readiness.
