Your library has a number of resources for encouraging aspiring artists and for supporting arts education. You can check out St. Louis Art Museum Kits, which contain replicas of art objects and artifacts that can be handled and looked at up close, as well as posters, books and either audio cassettes or videos. We also have plenty of art books for creative kids, as well as artwork on display in all of our libraries, from the mural of historic photographs at the Southern Boone County Public Library to pieces of the Columbia Art League’s permanent collection exhibited at the Columbia Public Library.
We are pleased to announce a new, locally created online resource available to explore and teach kids about art. The Museum of Art and Archaeology has created “A Portrait of the Museum in 30 Objects.” Each entry has a high quality image of a museum artwork – from ancient Roman objects to paintings and multi-media sculpture – available for Continue reading
Are you familiar with our Play As Learning kits and our Little Red Reading Bags? Well, hold onto your socks, because the library now has new kits available for check-out, too! Our Learning Props Game Kits are for preschoolers and kindergartners. The 11 different game kits cover a variety of school-readiness skills such as counting, color recognition and language development. Each bag contains a children’s concept book, fabric game mat, die and game pieces.
We have also added two new themes to our Play As Learning kits: Encouraging Science Play and Encouraging Fine Motor Skills. Remember, all of our kits check out for four weeks to give you plenty of time to explore and discover with your child. Come to the library to check one out or place one on hold today!
April Showers are upon us! I used to love those first cozy rainy days with the kiddos in my day care. And maybe the second. But by the third muddy day, we were a little more crazy than cozy. If you need a new rainy day trick, or a whole new bag, consider picking up a Little Red Reading Bag the next time you are in the library!
There are 12 different themes, and each Little Red Reading Bag contains books, a DVD, a music CD and a couple of awesome toys. Bags also include a skill sheet with suggestions of activities to support early literacy skills. (But don’t tell the kids – they just think it’s fun!)
Let’s say we check out Little Red Reading Bag B: Classic Tales. Inside we find four puppets. Maybe they are the characters from “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”! Let’s turn a table on its side…instant puppet theater! Continue reading

In early fall, a new version of the Little Red Reading Boxes will be available for check-out. This revamped service will be called Little Red Reading BAGS. We have new themes in the works and will be packing these story time kits with shiny new books and other updated materials!
Beginning June 1, the Little Red Reading Boxes will no longer be available for check-out; this will allow time for the completion of our transition to the Little Red Reading Bags. In the meantime, check out our other kits!
